Investigating the Opportunity Structure of Guardianship in Action

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

This paper will contribute to the development of the concept of capable guardianship from routine activity theory (Cohen & Felson, 1979; Felson & Cohen, 1980) by examining the explanatory power of guardianship compared to other related contextual factors in explaining criminal victimization at micro-places. This empirical study will employ an observational measure of guardianship in action in residential places by observing household occupancy, monitoring by residents and direct intervention during day-time and night-time hours. In doing so, this study will demonstrate the significant role of guardianship in action compared to other social, physical, demographic and spatial factors in explaining the amount of property crime recorded at the street-segment level. This paper will conclude by highlighting the ways in which these contextual factors independently and interactively help to generate opportunities for active, capable guardianship, while simultaneously blocking opportunities for crime.
