Abstract:

Little is known about the state of race relations in South Los Angeles. The Black-Brown dynamic became salient during the 1992 riots; still, few researchers have thoroughly explored the issue. Using ethnographic methods, the researchers have uncovered various sites of conflict, which constitute race, racial tension and violence among Latinos and Blacks, and their relations with police. Informants suggest that the Black community feels threatened by the encroaching Latinos and that the Latino community feels resentful for being targets of victimization. But how do people get along if one group feels threatened and the other victimized? The research has thus far provided an understanding of racialized violence as it occurs on three planes of convergence: the Black, the brown, and the blue. The goal of this project then is to understand the process of dissemination and actualization of dominant discoursepropagated though the various social, cultural, legal and media channelswhich now shape the cultural logic of race and gang conflicts, and the role of police within these. |
