Inmates' Attitudes About Homosexuality and Segregation

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Homosexuality occupies an important place in the inmate social world, often used to ascribe social status and linked to increased chances of being targeted for sexual violence. Recently, prison organizations have focused on making prisons safe places from sexual violence. The present study seeks to examine inmate attitudes toward homosexuality in prison. Using a sample of over 900 male and female inmates in a large Southern prison system, we examine gender differences and predictors of inmate attitudes toward same-sex intimate relationships between inmates. Attitudes toward the segregation of homosexual inmates and the impact that in-prison sexual victimization has on these attitudes are examined within the context of importation and deprivation hypotheses. Implications for the correctional setting will be discussed.
