Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

The paper presents an analysis of the socio-economic determinants of crime in Italy. The aim is to increase knowledge about patterns between socio-economic aspects and crime by identifying those variables which cause, produce or precede crime. The north and south of Italy are characterized by different social and economic features, as well as by different concentrations of property and violent crimes. Therefore examination of the relationships between the main aspects of the socio-economic context and crime enables explaination also of the distribution of crime among Italian provinces. Using Minister of Interior datasets drawn from police reports, the study employs the GMM-system estimator to explore whether and to what extent predictors such as labour market, inequality, education, demographic factors and social interactions cause or influence crime in Italian provinces.
