Beyond the “Black Widows”: Chechen Women, War and Suicide Terrorism

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

From 2000 to 2004, more than forty percent of suicide bombers from the Chechen Republic were women. In the media and in academic scholarship, these women most frequently are called the Black Widows. As the nickname implies, most often, Chechen women suicide bombers are described as a "cult" or "gang" of violent actors who are seeking revenge on behalf of fathers, sons and brothers killed during Russo-Chechen conflict. This paper explores from a trans-disciplinary perspective the emergence of this figure of the Black Widow terrorist in the Western media and in academic scholarship. I present data gathered via qualitative content analysis, in-depth interviews, and ethnographic research in order to discuss the ways in which the mythological figure of Black Widow terrorist both challenges and reflects historical and societal (mis)conceptions about both Chechen people and about women perpetrators of violence.
