Building Stress Management Teams in an Inside-Out Class

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

This presentation discusses the impact on the academic experience when students are engaged simultaneously in didactic and extensive experiential based learning. In the prison-based courses I teach, the Inside-Out model facilitates a powerful dialogue both within and between learners. Elements of this potentially transformative process, as well as the development of the understanding and appreciation of both the self and other are described in the presentation using examples from student feedback. Specifically highlighted are students’ experiences as they jointly examine stressors, their characteristic ways of managing stress and their training in new stress management techniques. The role of on-going stress management teams in learning about the physiology of stress and stress management strategies is central to the discussion. This “Stress Management for Health and Wellness” course emphasizes the development of self-regulation skills and incorporates cognitive, meditative and biofeedback approaches. The relevance of learning these techniques for both the college student and the incarcerated are described. This presentation is designed to provide participants with a format to discuss their own related academic service learning experiences.
