Masculinity and Gender Violence: Toward an Eco-Feminist Theoretical Framework

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

This paper extends eco-feminist theory to explain gender specific violence. Masculinist approaches to the other-than-human-life-world can inform our understanding of gender violence. Further, ideologies of dominance over nature are similar to ideologies of dominance in the practice of gender violence. This “logic of domination” over the environment makes male power over women appear “natural”. Further, violence by males is often “naturalized” by appealing to beliefs about the other-than-human-life-world. This analysis proposes a theoretical link between masculinity and its corollary of dominance, aggression, hierarchy on the one hand, and mastery over earth on the other hand. Finally, this analysis explores several parallels between gender violence and the way humans relate to the environment.
