Improving the Field Training Officer (FTO) Selection Process

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

This poster will provide guidelines for improving the FTO selection process. These findings are based on a recent pilot program at an average-size non-urban police department. First, the department undertook an in-depth examination of the FTO role as well as the agency’s goals. Second, FTO candidates’ level of burnout and cynicism was assessed. Third, both peer officers and supervisors were administered a survey to measure candidates' organizational citizenship. Finally, the candidates were given a structured interview based on typical FTO job tasks. Overlap between candidate cynicism score, peer and supervisor ratings, and interview scores is
discussed.
