Abstract:

African Americans & Study Abroad in the Caribbean will highlight the history of African American involvement in study abroad programs and explain how Black student involvement in international programs impact race relations in the Americas. Black student involvement in international programs plays a complex role in the quest for global citizenship, individually and collectively. The presentation explores the experiences of African American college students who participated in a summer service learning program during 2007, 2008, and 2009 in the Dominican Republic. CrossÂ’ identity development theory is used to establish the framework to present findings. Audience members will gain an understanding of how international experience impacts African American students as a critical component of our quest for citizenship within the Americas.
