Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to explore the existing cultural norms and ingrained structures of school organizations and responsibilities within, as well as the challenges and opportunities present in working toward high school leadership reform. I will be looking at data gathered from interviews, observations, and surveys in working with six high schools in two large urban districts. In order to understand the obstacles and opportunities that face high school leadership reform, I will provide a review of literature that will establish the background and history of the cultural norms and established structures in schools. A key finding is that school leaders, including principals, assistant principals, and department chairs, are working to rethink their roles and tasks in the school system in taking on the opportunity to grow as leaders for teaching and learning.
