Mapping Metal Thefts and Scrap Yards

Abstract:

This project investigates the relationship between scrap yard locations and the locations of metal thefts in Indianapolis in 2008. According to the rational choice perspective, the proximity of an outlet for selling stolen goods can affect the commission of crimes. Assuming scrap yards purchase the majority of stolen metals, either knowingly or unknowingly, one should expect more metal thefts near a scrap yard, since it would reduce the distance a thief would need to transport stolen material to a buyer. The current study maps the locations of metal thefts in Marion County in 2008 along with the locations of scrap yards in the county. It tests the hypothesis that metal thefts cluster around scrap yards more than one would expect if the presence of scrap yards had no effect on metal thefts.
