Field Training Officer (FTO) Styles Within an Urban Police Organization

Abstract:

Research has shown that the police academy inadequately prepare officers for entry-level police work. Most contemporary police departments transition newly-graduated police cadets into the officer work world through their field training program, and the most important person in this training is the field training officers (FTO). Field training is an important and influential time in the initial occupational socialization of the recruit. The FTO is crucial for the officers’ adaptation, integration into, and success within the department. Most research has focused on FTO attitudes and behaviors and how these relate to outcomes such as police tasks and discretion. To date, no study has identified and explored if FTOs have various categorical styles and their affect. Since the FTO is the first to orientate and socialize new recruits, it is likely that trainees’ careers and police behavioral attributes are impacted by this original influence. The present study explores the officers’ career success as it relates to the FTOs categorical style or styles. The policy implications of this study will impact the departments’ recruiting, selection, training and retention of FTO personnel as well as improving the capability of recruit officers and extend their careers by being a better, quality officer.
