Investigating Public Perceptions and Attiudes Towards Mothers Who Use Methamphetamine

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Labeling theory is used to study deviance and labels that are placed on individuals because of their deviant acts. Methamphetamine use is a form of deviance that often results in the application of negative stereotypes, use labeling theory to investigate the stigmatization that mothers who use methamphetamine face on a daily basis. For this research project I test the hypothesis that the more traditional a person’s gender identity, the more likely he or she is to have negative views of mothers who use methamphetamine. I am predicting these outcomes because mothers who use methamphetamine are defying traditional expectations of what a mother should be. No prior sociological research has looked at the public’s perceptions of mothers who use methamphetamine. I hope that this study might draw attention to this issue and help rehabilitation counselors teach mothers how to cope with the stigmatism they face on a day basis.
