Broadening Perspectives: Helping Students Understand Empirical Research

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Many instructors avoid using research articles in the classroom because they are unsure of how to present the material in a way that students will understand. Even though understanding and discussing empirical research is imperative to advancing the field, bringing these types of discussions into the classroom is daunting. This paper will address two major issues that will help instructors integrate empirical research into their courses in a way that facilitates student comprehension of the material: how to choose criminological research articles that students will understand, and how to present these articles so that students are able to discuss them and absorb the important information. Using the techniques discussed in this paper, instructors will learn how to find appropriate empirical articles to use in their courses, how to introduce these papers to their students, and how to lead discussions that fully engage their students in current criminological debates.
