Understanding Adolescent Female Delinquency

Abstract:

The current picture of detained girls is daunting and fuels many questions about their involvement in correctional institutions. This review will explore adolescent female delinquency and the related theoretical and empirical efforts. The questions that guided this review include 1) how has differential association been used to study delinquent girls? and 2) how have feminist theorists looked at the effects of institutionalization versus recidivism? Although differential association is a primary theory of interest, other theories are included based on the findings from the review. The remaining questions are about girls in correctional settings: 3) Do they serve as training grounds? 4) Are they harmful for girls? 5) Do they have an effect that influences girls? These questions highlight issues which criminology literature has overlooked in its tendency to focus on male offending. Also, I contend that the multiple forms of victimization that girls experience leads them to criminal pathways, so I have also included feminist theory. Finally, the overview of issues that girls have experienced also indicates the need to consider lifecourse and gendered perspectives
