Abstract:

As a young discipline, criminology and criminal justice experience substantial development after 1990. To evaluate academic development in this field, prior research focuses on faculty productivity by relying on the frequency and content of their formal publications. However, no study has comprehensively depicted the picture of the current state of this field and systematically compared research areas distribution across faculties, their affiliation, gender, race, seniority, etc. This article intends to visualize research interests among the faculty of criminology and criminal justice doctoral programs. Based on self-identified research interests of 541 faculties in 32 doctoral programs, the author establishes the research interest database. Combing statistical and visualization tools of multidimensional scaling (MDS) and Geographic Information System (GIS), the author put the discipline visualization in a dynamic context by linking multiple faculty characteristics simultaneously with their position in perceptual map.
