“A myriad of factors”: Therapists’ considerations in sex offender treatment

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Since the advent of both state and federal court cases concerning sex offender treatment and commitment issues, therapists are increasingly working with this population. This study investigated what type and duration of therapy would be recommended for fictional sex offenders utilizing low-risk and high-risk offender vignettes. Therapists were also asked what factors influenced their recommendations. Results in both cases showed therapists were most likely to utilize cognitive-behavioral therapy. The number of recommended sessions and the factors the therapists considered varied considerably between the cases. Therapists’ training, profession, and experience also significantly influenced their recommendations.
