National Songs and Cultural Identities in Britain

Abstract:

This paper traces the relationship between music and national feeling in Britain which permeated popular education during the latter part of the nineteenth century, culminating in the publication of The National Song Book (1906). By the First World War there was hardly a school in the country which did not possess a copy. The roots of the idea of national songs are traced back to Herder, Engel and William Chappell.

During this period music educationists developed distinct theories about the educative value of such songs in developing notions of nationhood, patriotism and racial pride. The debate about the relationship between music and national feeling is still very much alive. In 2008 it was reported that a project, supported by government ministers, to produce a new National Song Book for schools had ‘fallen flat’. The paper traces continuities and discontinuities with the present, and argues that the relationships between music and the formation of national and cultural identity through formal and informal instruction contain fruitful possibilities for further investigation by music education historians.
