Abstract:

The provision of UK government funding for “Wider Opportunities” means that over time every child in England will have the opportunity to learn an instrument in a whole class context. This presentation will explore: 1) How whole class instrumental and vocal programmes work in practice; 2) How teachers are supported by appropriate professional development; 3) How the four principles of integration, creativity, inclusion and collaboration are exemplified in practice using DVD extracts of whole class programmes in action; 4) How the development of a pedagogy where musical processes underpin planning, teaching and learning has proved critical to successful programmes and outcomes.
