Abstract:

In Hong Kong, China, due to music curriculum reform efforts begun in 2003, music teachers have had to develop citizenship education curricula in keeping with a state-sponsored goal of enhancing the next generation’s affinity for their musical heritage. Teaching Chinese music is one of the main thrusts of the new music curriculum, and since Cantonese opera is one Chinese musical genre familiar within Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Education Bureau has promoted Cantonese Opera since 1997. In this project, a university researcher and a Cantonese Opera artist received funding from the Hong Kong government’s Cantonese Opera Development Fund to partner with 16 teachers and 600 students in two secondary and two primary schools to co-teach the genre of Cantonese Opera. One of the learning tasks, e.g. was for students to to compose a kind of rhythmic speech (named “Bak Lam”) used in the Cantonese Opera. Since few teachers in Chinese schools are sufficiently familiar with Cantonese opera or Chinese musical arts to create curricula, and most music teachers in Hong Kong are trained in Western classical traditions, this project was funded as professional development grant for teachers.
