Professional Music Education in Iranian Universities: Contemporary Issues

Abstract:

This paper is a descriptive study about professional music in higher education in Iran. The purpose was to provide an introduction to professional Music Education in Iran. As a tutor at Tehran University of Art, the author has practical experience in the field of Music Education. The first part of this paper addressed the public school system in Iran and the qualifications of students to study at universities. It also explained that there are no music program in public schools but there are some other special music institutions for this level. The second part focused on the Iranian university system, which includes Bachelor degrees, Master degrees and Ph.D. degrees with the duration for each level. The author also informed types of the 400 universities in Iran. After this, the author discussed traditional music education in Iran, an auditory system, and then music education in contemporary higher level.

Two large, influential universities with certain curriculum programs financed by the government which are typical models of music education in tertiary level in Iran were selected: University of Art and University of Tehran. The history of these two institutions and fields of studies were provided: European Classical Music Performance, Persian Traditional Music Performance, and Composition. Details about types of bachelor and masters in these two institutions were given. Furthermore the qualifications of teacher and student entrance examination in each level and educational background of students was discussed. Additionally, the total number of students in each degree and in each university, credit point system of universities, academic years, curriculum programs, final exams, and theses were described. Based on these results, there appears to be no Music Education field in Iran; a discipline in need of establishment in Iran. With clarification in each system of music education in every culture can bring more understanding and can improve the quality of the music education system.
