Influence of Individual Differences Variables on Offender Attitudes Regarding Research Participation

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Despite being a protected class, almost no research to date has examined prisoners’ attitudes about research participation or the factors that could potentially affect their ability to make autonomous decisions. Therefore, the present study sought to address this issue by investigating individual difference variables, such as various personality traits, that may impact prisoners’ decision-making. Preliminary results from male and female Texas prisoners (N = 144) suggest that certain individual factors, such as psychological reactance, are relevant to inmates' perceptions of illicit pressures that they might experience in this context. Implications of these findings will be discussed at the presentation.
