When “Bad Girls” Choose “Bad Boys”: Romantic Relationship Violence among Incarcerated Girls

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Girls who are already on an at-risk trajectory in adolescence are at increased odds for experiencing dating violence. We analyzed longitudinal data to (a) examine the prevalence of victimization, partner abuse, and relationship caring among girls who were incarcerated in adolescence and (b) test whether exposure to parental violence, early victimization, and/or partner’s delinquency were stronger predictors of relationship violence than the girls’ delinquency. As expected, prevalence of partner abuse and victimization was high in mid- and late-adolescence. Partners’ delinquency and exposure to parental violence significantly discriminated between girls who experienced positive versus negative relationship outcomes. Implications will be discussed.
