Managing Campus Violence: A Consideration of Legal and Policy Issues

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

In light of recent tragedies, violence within schools across the country has motivated law enforcement, school administrations, and mental health professionals to establish strategies for threat assessment. These approaches must differ from traditional risk and threat assessment models considering the unique environment of campuses. In the effort to manage campus violence, there are several legal and policy issues that must be considered, including underlying assumptions about threat assessment, the impact of privacy laws HIPAA and FERPA, and existing threat assessment models. Data from a large University threat assessment team’s activities will be presented to underscore certain challenges in threat assessment and management.
