A Systematic Study of Sexual Coercion: Estimating the Role of Situational and Individual Difference Factors

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Situational and individual difference factors associated with sexual coercion were examined. Men interacted with a hypothetical woman in an intimate scenario. Whether she was provocatively dressed, intoxicated, and sexually experienced were factorially combined in a between subjects design. Eventually the woman stopped consenting, and whether the participant continued to make sexual advances was measured. Participant sexual history, physical aggression, and personality were also measured. With respect to the situational factors examined, only the woman’s dress predicted sexual coercion. Individual difference factors, in contrast, predicted sexual coercion to a larger extent. Findings are discussed in relation to sexual assault prevention.
