Have We Learnt Anything since Lipmann (1935): Reliability and Validity of Eyewitness Descriptions

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Compared to person identifications, person descriptions have received relatively little attention. We evaluate different methods to assess the reliability and validity of free and cued recall, adjective checklists, rating scales, and person estimates. Merits and problems of parametric and nonparametric indices of inter-coder reliability for normally distributed and skewed distributions are demonstrated in a pilot (N = 96) and a main study (N = 216) with participants watching a film of a theft, providing descriptions immediately and/or repeatedly after a week. Using a computerized scoring system, recommendations for validating "correct" and "incorrect" descriptors, "accuracy" and "consistency" across time are outlined.
