„The whole truth and nothing but the truth“ – metacognition put to practice in the situation of eyewitnesses

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Metacognitive processes are relevant for eyewitnesses facing the difficult task to present complete as well as accurate reports (e.g. Koriat, Goldsmith, 1996). Our study models relevant aspects of a real eyewitness‘ situation as far as the witnessed event, the interview situation, and the eyewitness‘ motivation to follow instructions. Five interview conditions manipulated the variables report option (free vs. forced) and answer format (free recall vs. questioning). Interviews were coded for accuracy, informativeness (number of details and grain size of each detail), and qualifying metacognitive remarks. Data were analyzed for answer switches in all three variables, and their triggers.
