Boundary Spanning: Assessing Skills in Bridging Systems for Offenders with Mental Disorder

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Probationers with mental disorder (PMDs) are at increased risk for supervision failure and require substantial services. Probation officer (PO) “boundary spanning” (stepping outside the supervisory role to coordinate PMDs’ services) may be useful for effectively addressing both concerns, but this construct has yet to be formally operationalized and examined. This study examines the construct and criterion validity of a new measure of PO boundary spanning. Using a longitudinal, matched study of 359 PMDs and their supervising POs, our measure of boundary spanning demonstrated good construct validity and promising criterion validity.
