Teacher education vis-a-vis national goals in a postcolony: A study on India

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

To trace the evolution of the Indian education system since its emergence from British rule it is not only necessary to look at the factors that cumulatively shaped its education system but also those that are often associated with its present attainments. Teacher education is often considered to play a significant role in sustaining the quality of a nation’s education, and has been treated as the primary focus of this study. Aimed at understanding the role played by the current system of Indian teacher education in reconstructing the nation’s developmental needs the study looks at the governmental policies that determine the role of the system vis-à-vis its existing structure shaped by the social, cultural and political contexts of the nation.
