Youthful Interpretations of Social Networking Sites: Integrating Concerns in Reception Analysis and Digital Literacies

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

While audience reception analysis grapples with users in place of audiences, media/digital literacies research is yet to engage technologies/texts and user/readers in relationships of mutuality. This paper converges both challenges by integrating a conceptual repertoire from audience reception with multi-method qualitative data from a project that researched youthful digital literacies on social networking sites. Using material from interviews and graphical user-representations of SNS, an analysis is presented in terms of anticipations of genre and modes of interpretative engagement. It is concluded that the text-reader framework of audience reception studies pushes the digital literacies discussion away from treating literacies as practical skills, encouraging a critical examination of people’s interpretative engagement with media texts. Theoretically, the paper indicates how this repertoire needs to be retained and revised in the age of the internet. Finally, it reflects on three areas of media/digital literacies research where a text-reader approach might prove to be fruitful.
