Young Swedish Female Top-Bloggers and the Performance of Authentic Selves

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Digital media raise new questions about the representation of values and identities in contemporary society, and about individual’s possibilities to engage as active subjects in these processes (Senft, 2008). This paper will address these issues through analyzing some of the most popular blogs written by young Swedish women. Sweden represents a salient case because of the position of young women writing about their personal life in the blogosphere. The paper will focus on the bloggers’ strategies for performing a self that is perceived as authentic by negotiating expectations and conventions of blogging as well as of normative femininity. The paper can contribute to research on new media and representations of identities through its empirical focus on a group of bloggers not covered in previous research, and by analyzing blogs as performances of self situated within and negotiating competing discourses of gender in late modernity.
