BBC News and the Financial Crisis: Dilemmas of Financial Reporting

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

This paper examines three key decisions made by BBC News during the financial crisis: the internal debate, the external reaction, and a retrospective judgement. The first decision looks at the run on the British bank, Northern Rock. Did the BBC cause the run on Northern Rock, as some suggest, and which led to the government nationalising the bank at the cost of 100 million pounds? The second decision: Calling the recession. When did the BBC admit the economy was in recession? Did the Corporation call it too early or too late? The third decision looks at the Lehman Brothers anniversary. Is it right for the BBC to identify the bankruptcy of Lehman as the key event that precipitated the financial crisis or this is an oversimplification that conceals more than it reveals?
