Biblical Stories and Mythical Narratives of Korean Television Drama

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Recently, biblical stories have become one of the main sources providing popular culture with myth and fantasy. Korean media which play a leading role in the entire Asian continent under the name of “Korean Wave” are frequently carrying religious themes and Christian views as shown in Korean art films including Secret Sunshine and Thirst Moreover, blockbuster television dramas demonstrate religious themes with action genre conventions. Korean television dramas East of Eden and Cain and Abel are the two cases that I would like to look into. This study will examine social aspects of biblical themes in Korean popular culture. First, I will perform a textual analysis of drama narratives referring to Levi Strauss’s theories and their application to the Bible by Edmund Leach. Second, I will examine the social aspect of creating myths in Korean popular culture by applying Carl Jung’s theory of psychoanalysis and religion.
