Abstract:

The current study investigates engagement activities in an online resource exchange community to research elements such as sense of belonging, connectedness, and trust in a global online community. CouchSurfing.com is an online community where members coordinate travel accommodations with other members, as well as gatherings for cultural exchange. As such, CouchSurfing.com presents an online community where the exchange of resources presents tangible offline commitments, and has created a global cooperative network. Findings confirmed that members who have not met face-to-face with other members have a lower sense of belonging to the community then those who have. Increased attendance to gatherings was positively related to sense of belonging to the community and hosting had a positive relationship with trust in the community. Additionally, CouchSurfers prefer to be contacted through personal e-mails rather then group e-mails, although group e-mails are found to be useful to members with increased participation to gatherings.
