Big Macs/Peanut Butter and Jelly: An Exploration of Dialectical Contradictions Experienced by the Sandwich Generation

Abstract:

This paper explores the relational dialectic contradictions experienced by female multi-generational caretakers, commonly called the sandwich generation. The hypothesis of this study, that relational dialectic contradictions would mediate the relationship between perceived self-efficacy and the satisfaction a caretaker has with the relationship she has with both her care-recipient and oldest child, was partially supported. Specifically, three significant relationships were discovered: autonomy-connection mediates the relationship between the self-reliance dimension of self-efficacy and satisfaction with the relationship with the care-recipient, the relationship with the care-recipient mediates the relationship between autonomy-connection and satisfaction with the relationship with the child, and a relationship was discovered between openness-closedness and care-recipient satisfaction. Several avenues for future research are suggested based upon findings.
