Abstract:

This meta-analysis reviews 38 studies focusing on PCL-R scores in sex offender populations. Results revealed that overall, sex offenders displayed a mean PCL-R total score of 20.37 (SE=.73), with mean Factor 1 and 2 scores of 8.01 (SE=.29) and 9.23 (SE=.49). Mixed sex offenders demonstrated the highest PCL-R scores (x=23.78,SE = 1.58), followed by adult sex offenders (x=22.44,SE =1.32) and child sexual offenders (x=16.74,SE =.95). Effect sizes from direct comparison studies showed child sex offenders displayed lower total (d=-.54) and Factor 2 (d=-.65) PCL-R scores than adult sex offenders but the effect for Factor 1 (d=-.26) was considerably smaller.
