“Interrogating the Place of Technologies and the Technologies of Place in Education”

Abstract:

The proliferation of information and communication technologies available to “digital natives” has immense implications for education and best practices in teaching and learning. There are two key pedagogical issues: First, the degree to which new technologies and media belong in the classroom, enhance the learning experiences of students, and lead to transformative learning. And second, the extent to which new technologies empower students to re-claim a sense of place and connect to the local communities they inhabit. In this paper, these questions are addressed through examples of documentary-making projects that interrogate the place of the camera in the classroom and beyond (issues of gaze, authorship, narrative, research guidelines, etc.) and whether such a pedagogy offers students a way to build bridges with communities and find a renewed sense of purpose for learning. The paper concludes with a discussion of the challenges and rewards for educators who reflexively adopt new technologies.
