Expanding Relational Turbulence Theory to Triadic Contexts: Relational Uncertainty, Extradyadic Interference, and Relational Interference as Consequences of Partners' Competing Relationships

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

This paper extends the application of relational turbulence theory to triadic relationships created by a romantic partner's involvement in a cross-sex friendship. The concept of interference is expanded to encompass relational interference, as well as interference from extradyadic sources. Using a survey, 222 individuals responded to hypothetical scenarios involving meeting a romantic partner's cross-sex friend. Inconsistent with relational turbulence theory, the predicted curvilinear associations between intimacy and relational uncertainty and interference did not emerge.
