Message Strategies Used by Public Communication Campaigns Addressing Social Determinants of Health and Health Disparities: An Exploratory Study

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Although social determinants of health (SDH) and health disparities have received increased attention, public awareness and concern are lacking. We seek to develop and test theory-informed message strategies for raising public awareness of and concern about these issues. We content analyzed messages disseminated by two SDH awareness initiatives, focusing on three types of evidence: narratives, statistics, and visual images. We comment on such evidence using persuasion theories and discuss implications for SDH-related message design.
