Abstract:
|
This panelist argues for recognizing the music of Billie Holiday as a source of political discourse in the classroom. Building on Toni Cade Bambara’s articulation of the development of an “actional self,” the speaker explains how Holiday’s performance of the song, “Strange Fruit,” inspires emotional response to the trauma of lynching in the South in the 1930s. Holiday's performance generates a paradigm shift for the listener who shifts from processing lynching as an abstract thought to a lived experience that has affected people in his or her community--local, regional, or national. |
