Abstract:
|
My African ancestors lived a holistic African way of life in the Horn of Africa like many communities in the Continent. My presentation will explore the social formative processes of my Somali identity to indicate the importance of Indigenous Somali dhaqan [culture] knowledges that I embody. As member of the African diaspora living in Canada I am always conscious of a holistic way of life that encompassed spirituality, social governance, and collective community memory. This holistic way of life stems from pre-colonial Africa thereby allowing me to conceptualize my identity free from the colonial gaze and ideologies and to tell a different story of my Africanness. My analysis will be grounded in Indigenous knowledges epistemologies and ontologies as I emphasize the importance of re-visiting our past and imagining Africa pre-colonial conquest to enable us to speak with a holistic self. |
