The Life and Career of Bishop Henry McNeal Turner

Abstract:

Bishop Henry McNeal Turner was one of the leading African American figures during the second half of the nineteenth century. Despite Turner’s voluminous corpus of material, Turner has received little attention. Although some African American history scholars have mentioned Turner in their studies, outside of one critical biographical treatment, Turner has not received the attention of some of his contemporaries. For example, there has been only scant attention paid to Turner’s emigration policies and no extensive or full length treatments of Turner’s theology, ethics, church administration or his role as Bishop.

While there may be several reasons for the dearth in Turner scholarship, I believe one of the reasons has been that up to now, Turner’s writings have been scattered. In short, to do primary research on Turner would take hours of research time on the internet and many more hours in the library searching through old microfilm, going to research libraries and examining collections with artifacts that are over 120 years old. Therefore, this essay aims to (re) introduce Turner to scholars of African American history by first offering a biographical sketch of Turner, second, offering a review of the scholarship that focuses on Turner, and finally, a discussion of the series I am currently working on with Mellen Press to publish the writings of Turner.
