Abstract:

This examination of the life of Mrs. Annie M. Turnbo Malone presents the creation of Poro College in a historical context which has been overlooked in the history of African-American business. Why has the life of premier entrepreneur Mrs. Annie M. Turnbo Malone escaped serious scholarship for decades? What caused the precipitous decline of Poro College in the 1930's and the demise of African American dominance in the market for black beauty products? What was the origin of the concept and virtues upon which Poro was founded? Finally, why is there such a dearth of documentary evidence on Poro's existence today? The paper will develop the following three keys to understanding the achievements of Mrs. Malone, to wit:
-A work ethic which demanded she live in close proximity to her business.
-A complete devotion to helping others, often against the best interests of her business.
-A steadfast resistance to male domination of the company she created for the uplift of African-American women.
-The template which Mrs. Malone utilized as a pathway for her success.
A series of well-published inaccuracies concerning her family life will be corrected and a more in-depth exploration of the concepts and motivations which led to the development of Poro College will be discussed. This paper is an abstract of a biographical work, nearing completion, which I am writing on Mrs. Malone's life and Poro College.
