"It isn't ice cream and cake. . .it must be something in them that is deeper": The St. Louis Urban League's Neighborhood Club and Block Unit Movement

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

This paper will address one of the most understudied areas of the Urban League movement's workin the field of "community organization" -- the Urban League's local neighborhood work. It challenges the notion that the league's neighborhood work was little more than acculturative efforts rooted in attempts to "improve personal and group behavior." This paper will demonstrate how the neighborhood clubs and block units contributed to the solidification of black identity and working-class group consciousness over the first half of the twentieth century.
