Abstract:

Elijah Muhammad has been described in many circles as the man "who raised a nation". Muhammad coming out of rural Georgia from the 1930’s-1975 created an economic empowerment program for Blacks that has yet to be rivaled. In this presentation Elijah Muhammad’s ideas about education are discussed within the context of the social reproduction theory and critical race theory. Drawing from these theoretical approaches an examination of Elijah Muhammad’s do for self program as well as his articulation of the knowledge of self are highlighted as it relates to Black economic empowerment. Highlighted throughout the presentation are Muhammad's ideas about the kind of education he envisioned as the basis for real freedom.
