The Outer Space of Inner Movement: Surface, Depth, and Becoming

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Why does it matter that Sun Ra (with his love of outer space) was on the jazzmobile of the BARTS collective? Why does it matter that Baraka recalls, in his autobiography, that, in the early days of the movement, he would stencil Black Power fists on abandoned buildings? Why does it matter that African American cultural nationalism has often relied on making the surface of style gain interiority and substance? This paper reconsiders the BAM interplay of inner and outer space through a focus on the marking of surfaces, the outer space of the more abstract art, and the understanding of blackness as becoming in the conceptual, process-oriented art.
