Afro-Futurism- Super Stars and Super S/Heroes: Is Popular Culture Giving Black Youth a False Sense of our Possible Future

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

In the past, African American role models were often figures who had made significant contributions to Civil Rights or Black Power struggles. Over time these subjects came to be vested with iconic status. Due to the influence of popular culture, such icons also came to include sports, entertainment, and political figures. Now, in today’s climate of hyper-reliance on mass media, these superstars are being driven to even greater heights and are beginning to take on the aura of Super S/Heroes. This paper will examine how futuristic writers and critics are raising concerns about such trends, asking whether they may result in upcoming generations of mesmerized black youth who are out of touch with what it may really take to empower increasingly impoverished black communities.
