Place-Making and Mobilizing in the Republic of New Afrika

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

The relationship between place and social movement mobilization is demonstrated in the place-making cultural political practices of the Republic of New Afrika (RNA), a black nationalist movement in the United States struggling since 1968 for a plebiscite, reparations, and sovereign territory which would include the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. Place-making practices are a key geographical component of New Afrikan nation-building and consist of map making, changing place-names, organizing historical tours, representing place in movement literature, and visiting, migrating to, and organizing events in the New Afrikan national territory. The meaning of such practices is conveyed through a critical ethnography that presents the voices of New Afrikan citizens who discuss how places such as the New Afrikan national territory, the Kush District, and the movement’s former Lewis Street headquarters in Jackson, Mississippi, challenge and redefine America’s cultural and political landscape.
