Urban Youth Culture's Experiments in Living: The Results Are In

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Black life chances in the US have declined over the last twenty years, just as the fortunes of hip-hop culture have soared. Accounting for the economic and existential devastation that we find in black communities will surely require a complex, multi-layered explanation, but the embrace of various forms of the gangsta ethos seems to be at least part of the story. “Urban Youth Culture’s Experiments in Living” treats the gangsterization of post-civil rights culture as an experiment in the cultivation of ethical sensibilities, and asks the following questions: How has this experiment worked for black people? And isn’t it time to try something else?
