African American Banks and Financial Institutions; Who Needs Them?

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

What is the history of black owned banks and financial institutions in America? Were they important in the building of black communities after slavery and on into to the 20th century or was their impact marginal? I will look at the role of black owned banks and other financial institutions in the growth of black communities all over the US from the south, the northeast, the midwest, southwest and far west. Finally, in light of recent events in banking and the current wreckage now littering the US financial landscape, we will ask whether the time for black owned financial institutions has past or is in fact part of the wave of the future and seek to provide an answer.
